Fishing Around is an exciting community heritage project exploring the heritage of fishing in north west Sutherland. The project is part of Strathnaver Museum's activity programme for 2022-23 and is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Highland Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, Co-op Community Fund.

Using items from Strathnaver Museum's Collection we will explore our fishing heritage and culture through the sharing of stories, photos and opportunities to explore these objects in closer detail. Reminiscence sessions will gather stories and images which can be added to our archive for future generations to enjoy.

The highlight of the project will be the opportunity to build a traditional fishing boat based on the WK322 'Iris' which is one of the largest objects in the museum collection. Participants will be instructed in traditional boat building to create a seaworthy community fishing boat. Workshops will be held at Borgie Log Cabins from November 2022.

A traditional fishing boat, a Stroma yawl, lies in the corner of a building which has wood panelling on the walls with a colourful frieze depicting the story of the Highland Clearances. In the boat is an assortment of fishing memorabilia such as creels, fish boxes, anchors, nets, buoys, and a dog skin buoy.
